African American Tarot Review

Mind, Body & Soul Ezine Card Deck Review: African American Tarot - The legendary cultural identity of the Afro-Americans. Written by Jamal R with artwork by Thomas Davis, 78 cards with instruction leaflet. Published by Lo Scarabeo. Cards plus instruction insert.

The little white booklet is written in five languages (English, Italian, French, German, Spanish). The cards tell of a creation story with key concepts about traditions and associations. Each painting is traditionally African, but many cards have a smaller monochrome image of modern life and work, providing two levels of reading. There are many African animals, including rare species, beautifully produced. The artwork is original, enjoyable and stimulating.

Many cards involve archetypes and mythological stories from Uganda, Namibia, Benin, Togo, Kenya and other African countries, and the US. The artwork is varied, expressive and innovative.
I very much enjoyed the artwork, and also the short write-ups for the Major Arcana, court cards and the pip cards (chalices, pentacles, wands and swords). For those who like the stories of African cultures, this is the deck for you! Included in the deck are famous people of the arts, sciences, inventors and discoverers.
A ten card reading, titled 'Anansi's Web' offers good questions for the seeker who wants a fairly in depth reading.
For example, the 6 of Chalices is titled Yumbore - the traditional Senegal reading is of the night of the fairies. The modern reading is the singer 'Bessie Smith'. Meaning: celebration, joy of living, a pleasant place, enjoyable memories, positive experiences. The 5 of Swords, the lion, leopard, the hunter and 'Marcus Garvey'. Meaning: defeat, failure, loss of privileges, dishonour, infamy and exile.
These cards are slim and suitable for female hand shuffling. I think the theme of the deck is most suitable for an experienced reader and one who can tune in to the energies and create a storyline relating to the images and brief but meaningful explanations.
