Shamanic Wisdom Keepers

Mind Body & Soul Ezine Book Review: Shamanic Wisdom Keepers - Shamanism in the Modern World by Timothy Freke, published by Godsfield Press.

Each chapter features an interview with an authority on on a specific firm of traditional shamanism, such as Jamie Sams (Cherokee and Seneca), Malidoma Patrice Some (West African Dagara), Miguel A Kavlin (Amazonian), Haleakala Hew Len (Hawaiian), Lama Khemsar Rinpoche (Tibetan Yungdrung Bon), Andy Baggot (Celtic), Aiko Aiyana (Santo Daime), Martin Prechtel (Tzutujil Mayan), Ernesto Alvarado (Apache), and Lorraine Mafi-Williams (Australian Aboriginal), with poetry, prayer and colour plates.

A promotional coffee table book! Look at the photos and dip into the text. Many of the stories are similar but have many differences.

How many of us say we have a power animal yet do not campaign for our spirit guide to be released from slavery and be cared for with a healthy territory and free life? What sort of shamans are we if we take illegal drugs, get drunk, have tattoos, and do not reduce the carbon footprint that jeopardises the lives of indigenous peoples around the world and reduces the territories of precious wild species that are older than we are on this planet?

Shamans are otherworld travellers who understand the need for humanity to develop integrity, maturity, kindness, morality and altruism. What I like about shamans is their honouring of nature and their questing for the great mysteries of existence, the special destiny that we each have, the life purpose that will help us save this planet for those yet to be born.  The ancients lived closely with the natural world, drawing strength, inspiration, knowledge and caring from it, and this revival of the shamanic traditions will, I hope, help to protect our planet Earth's water, plants and species.
