Tarot of the Golden Wheel

Mind Body Soul Magazine Card Deck Review: Tarot of the Golden Wheel by Mila Losenko, published by US Games Systems Inc. Boxed set of 78 cards and guidebook. £15.99

With inspiration from Russian folk tales and with bright hand painted artworks of costume and the traditional rural culture of the Slav ccountryside, this is a deck of great beauty and meaning. The artist and concept writer, Mila Losenko originates in the Altai Mountains. She has a degree in Teaching Fine Arts and works as a book illustrator. She has produced a very interesting card deck in the Tarot of the Golden Wheel with exquisite water colour paintings!

Based on the Rider-Waite deck, the hero here who I love very much because he became a real person to me, is an Ivan the Fool character who passes through many trials, water and fire in the Far Away Kingdom to demonstrate restraint, creativity, courage, honesty, humility and other eternal spiritual values. He meets many people en route; friends, enemies and talking beasts that help him to hone his strengths, eliminate his weaknesses and transform himself into a mature and competent person of worth to the world. The sacred wheel is taken as the major emblem of this deck and its association with the struggle between good and evil, the development of our human relationships and the beauty and importance of nature are its themes. There are portrayals animals that provide wise guidance, the seclusion of precious places in nature, the power of the sun and moon, planting and harvesting, the passage of the seasons.

Pentacles are the Golden Wheels, red is for beauty and joy, green for prosperity, blue for alienation and spirituality, gold is for springtime. Belts, ear-rings, necklaces, bracelets, headbands are protective amulets, embroidered flowers and patterns, animals and the sun are motifs that are to be enjoyed.

The Majors are renamed: Impulse, Keeper of the Key, Mother Earth, Partnership, Transformation, Clarity, to name just a few. Each Minor is also titled and there is a suggested Golden Wheel Spread of 8 cards. Recommended! Delightful!
