Rackham Tarot card deck review

Mind Body & Soul Ezine Card Deck Review: Rackham Tarot. 78 full colour individual cards. Published by Lo Scarabeo.

With illustrations from the artwork of Victorian illustrator Arthur Rackham, born 1867, Rackham illustrated A Midsummer Night's Dream, Grimms Fairy Tales, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, Tales of Mystery & Imagination, the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and a Christmas Carol. The late 19th century was known as 'the Golden Age of Illustration' with highly imaginative artists, such as Walter Crane and Aubrey Beardsley. Arthur Rackham’s extraordinary work was the most sought after.

Using pen and ink, or ink with soft colour washes, Rackham's art is mysterious and highly imaginative, with much detailed action of the mythological figures. There is no book to accompany these cards. I would say they are more for experienced tarot readers than beginners. Recognition is by number or symbol at the top of the image and number or symbol at the bottom. I would have liked to know the books  that the images were reproduced from.

The little white booklet provides basic information in English, Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese. The reader strongly relies on intuition. Shuffle, pick 3 cards, arrange them left to right. Turn left card over. This is Hindsight. Then the middle card. This is Insight. Then the last card. This is Foresight. If you love your fairy tales, and you love creative artwork, you will love this tarot card deck.
Sample reading:

Hindsight: On the left is King of Pentacles. From the lwb: A kind mature man who gives good advice. Sustained wealth. Traditions and family history. Honour your roots.

My reading from the image is of an 'old fool' who appears to be wearing a very ample gold lame dressing gown with elegant bedroom slippers and he is wearing a crown - as though this is his sleeping cap! There is something eccentric about this character. However, do not overlook this much loved grandpa! In the middle of the night, he is working on investments and finances!  He has removed his spectacles as he knows this subject like the back of his hand. He is speaking to you about the contents of the huge book of wisdom on his table. What is he saying? Who would you go to for advice?

Insight: Middle card is Major Arcana XX1 The World. From the lwb: It is time to turn your back on the past. Its lessons have been learned, and the cycle has been completed. The next cycle starts now, but only if you accept the chance to start anew. Release what is finished. Completion, wholeness, seeing the pattern of life, connection to the world.

My reading from the image is of a beautiful young woman, as naked and natural as the day she was born. Her long tresses are caught by the wind. She looks into the far distance. What are her thoughts? Her name is Daphne, the water nymph who has been chased by the God of music and poetry, Apollo. For her protection, she changes herself into a beautiful scented laurel tree - here the world tree - which grew in the Garden of Eden and grows today providing wood, shelter, habitat, flowers and berries, cleansing the atmosphere and providing beauty. What value do you provide for this world? Turn over new leaf - the world awaits your offering.

Foresight: On the right is Queen of Wands. From the lwb: A charming and bewitching woman who draws followers and friends like a candle attracts moths. A creative muse.

My reading of the image is of a young and beautiful woman wearing a very expensive dress. She is being welcomed by a man in an ornate wig as though she is attending an aristocratic dance. She is a celebrity from the past who everyone wants to meet because she is such an inspiration. What celebritiy from the past inspires you? Who do you motivate?
