No Wonder They Call Him Saviour

Mind Body & Soul Ezine Book Review: No Wonder They Call Him Saviour -Experiencing the Truth of the Cross by Max Lucado.

This is an ideal book to read during Holy Week or even during Advent. This is all about the crucifixion. Jesus throughout his three year ministry, teaches us about empathy, about compassion, about charity and altruism, humility, kindness, all loving values. His arrest and death teaches us about betrayal, hatred, hypocrisy, self service, greed, jealousy, mockery and humiliation, the abuse of power, cruelty, arrogance and all evils of this world. His is the ancient story of all religions and authentic spiritual movements, the war between good and evil in our world.

The book provides the story of Holy Week, from Palm Sunday when Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey and the people lay palm fronds on the ground in honour of the great teacher and healer he has become. In only a few days, he will be crucified. The book also provides for us the words that Jesus says as he hangs on the cross. The author takes us on this journey where we learn compassion.

Each disciple is profiled, including Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea who were Sanhedrin members. Though the story is well recorded, the author invites us to think of what was happening that Passover on Temple Mount. He also reminds us of the scapegoat, the sin offering, calling out to God in his abandonment on the cross, the prophecy. Man yet god who demonstrated to us that god is not the ruthless jealous god of the Old Testament, but gives a new covenant, and is gentle, forgiving, and compassionate. The text includes the resurrection, that Christian’s also believe. The author is a Christian minister in Oak Hills, San Antonio, USA.

Recommended. Devotional reading. Review by Wendy Stokes https://wendystokes.co.uk
