Mind Body & Soul Ezine Book Review: The Fourteen Holy Helpers - Invocations for Healing & Protection by Christiane Stamm. Published by Earthdancer, an imprint of Inner Traditions. US $12.99 : Can $16.50 : UK £9.99
These 14 ‘saints’ are in Catholic and Christian theology can intercede/petition for us and bring specialised power to us. They have been venerated, especially in times of difficulty and over the centuries, they have represented particular professions. Their traditional life stories are given in brief. Prayers are provided for each helper, to be recited in triplicate, and there is a communal prayer to all fourteen. These helpers and their prayers can be used for the self or for others in need. There are, alongside each helper, the ailment they attend to (mostly modern and common illnesses that we would recognise).
How to make an amulet for this work, how to petition the helpers, how to get help from angels and ascended masters, are provided. Invocations for the home, for partnerships, and initiations are explained. Step by step instructions are given; some prayers to be learnt by heart. The chapters with selected prayers and crystals are for Sts Agathius, Barbara, Blaise, Catherine of Alexandria, Christopher, Cyriacus, Denis, Erasmus, Eustace, George, Giles, Margaret of Antioch, Pantaleon, and Vitus. There are 4 Holy Marshals who are Anthony the Great, Hubert, Pope Cornelius, and Quirinus of Neuss. Though this has the basis of Christianity in the helpers faith themselves, it can be used by other faiths.
I had a few minor conflicts! I’m shocked to learn that not all those who die go straight into the safety of the afterlife! Of course, saints have never been ‘worshipped’ - only God is worshipped. I don’t use crystals due to mining concerns. However, I am using the prayers and feel connected to them through the very simple ‘initiation’ process (which is more like a dedication as an ‘initiation’ is considered by some to be a lifelong commitment). I think the book is excellent value for money. Recommended, bearing in mind that it is presented as a flexible method.
